Beyond my artistic pursuits, I am dedicated to being your trusted companion throughout your wedding or elopement journey.
Deciding whether or not to have a wedding first look can be one of the toughest choices you’ll make while planning your wedding day. This fairly new wedding tradition has gained popularity for good reason. But, some couples worry that it might take away from the emotional moment of walking down the aisle. As a destination wedding photographer, I’ve had the privilege of capturing countless first looks. So, I can confidently say—whether you choose to have one or not, your wedding day will still be full of intimate moments and unforgettable emotions.
A wedding first look is a private moment before the wedding ceremony where couples see each other for the first time in their wedding attire. Traditionally, couples wait until they walk down the aisle to lock eyes, but a first look allows you to share that special moment in a more intimate setting. This moment can be emotional, exciting, and, most importantly, a chance to connect before the whirlwind of the day unfolds.
Many couples opt out of a first look because they feel it might take away from the special moment of seeing each other at the altar. After all, the aisle walk is one of the most magical and anticipated parts of the wedding day. Some couples want to experience that emotional build-up and share their first look with their loved ones present. Additionally, sticking to tradition may feel more meaningful to those who value the classic timeline of events.
As a wedding photographer, I have witnessed firsthand how powerful a first look can be. After all, this moment allows couples to have a quiet, private moment before the ceremony begins. They can share tears and laughter and even exchange a few words of encouragement without the crowd watching. However, I’ve also captured weddings where couples choose to forgo the first look and embrace the traditional aisle reveal. In both cases, the emotions are real, raw, and incredibly meaningful.
When my husband and I were planning our wedding, we decided on a first look. I can honestly say it was one of the best choices we made! Not only did it allow us to share an incredibly special moment, but it also gave us time to breathe, hug, laugh, and pray together before the ceremony. Seeing my husband react to my wedding dress after a year of waiting was unforgettable. We even included our puppy, Theo, which made it all the more special! Later, during the aisle walk, I still felt all the emotions flood in—ugly crying and all!
If you’re still on the fence about having a first look, here are three compelling reasons why it might be the right choice for you:
Your wedding day will fly by. So, having a first look allows you to soak in extra time with your future spouse. This special time together can also help ease any nerves and let you connect before the busyness of the day sets in.
A first look offers a rare private moment for just the two of you. In fact, this quiet time lets you be present with each other. In this moment, you’re free from distractions. You’ll have a chance to really take in the excitement of seeing each other in your wedding attire. You can talk, laugh, and truly enjoy each other’s company before the guests arrive.
One of the biggest perks of a first look is the flexibility it provides for your wedding day timeline. By scheduling your wedding party photos, family photos, and wedding portraits ahead of time, you free up your schedule to enjoy your cocktail hour and celebrate with guests who have traveled to be there. As a result, you’ll feel less rushed and more present during your reception.
Deciding on a wedding first look is just one piece of the wedding day puzzle.
